Home winterization tips
Tuesday, December 1st, 2009 by Roto Rooter Bloggers
Today’s chilly morning is a perfect reminder that when our actual winter arrives in the Hampton Roads area it will be sudden. You should take preventive actions before it's too late and it costs you a lot of money to repair frozen pipes. Plumbing experts at Norfolk Roto-Rooter recommend taking these early precautions before winter arrives. - Disconnect outside water hoses. If left connected during freezing temperatures, water in hoses will freeze and expand causing connecting faucets and pipes to break.
- Inspect outside faucets. If dripping or leaking, make necessary repairs or call Norfolk Plumbers before a freeze.
- Cover outside faucets using a faucet insulation kit.
- Set your water heater thermostat to 120° F for optimum performance while reducing the risk of scalding.
- Clear leaves and debris from roof gutters and downspouts to ensure proper drainage throughout the winter season.

Roto-Rooter prepares for the ‘cloggiest’ day of the year
Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 by Paul AbramsThe day after Thanksgiving is the single busiest day of the year for Roto-Rooter’s residential plumbers. Big holiday meal prep
aration and cleanup mean lots of grease and food go down the kitchen drain into the garbage disposal. Holiday guests require additional clothes washing, showers and toilet flushes, all of which put a strain on household plumbing.
Often, a house already has partially clogged drains that aren’t noticeable until holiday guests arrive and overwhelm the system and virtually every traditional Thanksgiving dish is an ideal clog culprit if it goes down the drain.
Incoming calls to Roto-Rooter, mostly for kitchen plumbing jobs, will jump 50% over an average Friday. The four-day Thanksgiving weekend represents a 21% increase over any other Thursday through Sunday period of the year. But we at Roto-Rooter will have enough plumbers on duty to handle the extra demand.
By following these recommendations, Thanksgiving hosts can avoid a visit from their plumber over the holiday weekend:
· Never pour fats or cooking oils down drains. They solidify in pipes. Instead, wipe grease from pots with paper towels and throw in trash.
· No stringy, fibrous or starchy waste in the garbage disposal (poultry skins, celery, fruit & potato peels). Disposals can’t sufficiently grind these items.
· Make sure the disposal is running when you put food into it. Don’t wait until it’s full to turn it on.
· Wait ten minutes between showers so slow drains have time to do their job.
· Never flush cotton balls, swabs, hair or facial scrub pads down a toilet. They don’t dissolve and they cause clogs.
If you need a plumber, call before the holiday to avoid delays and holiday service charges. While our company-owned locations no longer charge extra for nights, weekends or holidays, this is not always the case with some independent Roto-Rooter franchises. I'm pretty sure that's why we get fewer calls on Thanksgiving Day but we get slammed the very next day. Either way, we'll be available for any emergency service as your 24 hour plumbing company.

Thanks Roto-Rooter
Friday, November 13th, 2009 by Roto Rooter BloggersJamel assessed the situation gave us an estimate and went to work right away. While he was running the snake through the sewage line , we heard a very loud pop that broke his cable. While the line was clear and water was flowing through the pipe he called Craig Webb to come out and check the line with a camera. Craig showed up shortly after and ran the camera through the line. He found that roots were growing into the line. He and Jamel explained the situation to my wife and I and prepared an estimate to repair the sewer line.
We were so impressed with the outstanding service we received and the absolute professionalism of Jamel and Craig and used them to complete the additional job. By Tuesday, the area was excavated and the pipe was repaired. I was impressed with the professionalism of the entire Roto-Rooter Plumbing crew.

Way to go Woodbridge!

Here is a sampling of what one of our customers recently wrote in about a few plumbing problems they had been having: The Woodbridge, Virginia Plumbers of Roto-Rooter did an excellent job unclogging my tub drain. Their plumber, Mr. Devon Houston, was on time and very courteous. Not only did he fix my drain, he removed a screw that I broke while trying to get the cover off of the upper drain in my tub. Devon also gave me a drain filter to prevent future clogs. My service is guaranteed for one year and I paid about $150 less than a competitors quote. WOW!!! Five Stars for Roto-Rooter Plumbing of Woodbridge!

Drain Clogs
Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 by Roto Rooter BloggersClogged drains are quite a common service call for the Raleigh plumbers here at Roto-Rooter and we are fully aware of the issues that can arise from clogs. When liquid drain cleaners fail to eliminate a clog, the next option is to use a snake. People can end up spending a lot of money on liquid products or blow bags, which will sometimes clear a clog, but typically only lead to a temporary fix.
A snake will scrape the clog, grind up and push out whatever is blocking the main line. Once you are able to clean it completely, you can maintain the drain by using an enzyme cleaner that eats away at soap, grease and
hair; our Roto Rooter Pipe Shield is highly recommended.
The Raleigh plumbers of Roto-Rooter are more than willing and able to assist you with this or any other plumbing or drain problem. Feel free to visit our Web site for more information.
