Drain Clogs

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 by Roto Rooter Bloggers

Clogged drains are quite a common service call for the Raleigh plumbers here at Roto-Rooter and we are fully aware of the issues that can arise from clogs. When liquid drain cleaners fail to eliminate a clog, the next option is to use a snake. People can end up spending a lot of money on liquid products or blow bags, which will sometimes clear a clog, but typically only lead to a temporary fix.

A snake will scrape the clog, grind up and push out whatever is blocking the main line. Once you are able to clean it completely, you can maintain the drain by using an enzyme cleaner that eats away at soap, grease and hair; our Roto Rooter Pipe Shield is highly recommended.

The Raleigh plumbers of Roto-Rooter are more than willing and able to assist you with this or any other plumbing or drain problem. Feel free to visit our Web site for more information.

Septic System Savvy

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 by Roto Rooter Bloggers

Any Raleigh plumber will assure you that septic systems can last a lifetime with the proper care. Here are some maintenance tips below:

  • Keep trees and brush at least 100 feet away from the drain field to ensure proper flow and  functionality

  • Use a root destroyer on a yearly basis to prevent roots from interfering  with your septic system

  • Get your septic tank pumped every two years to remove any buildup of grease and/ or other dense matter that could prevent the drain field from draining well

Other beneficial recommendations would be to utilize low flow aerators in your faucets, low flow toilets, low flow shower heads and a water saver washer, which in general, lessen water usage. Using less water will most definitely have a positive impact on your septic system and will help prolong its life as well.

A Quick Flushing Fix

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009 by Roto Rooter Bloggers

A Raleigh plumbing customer recently wrote in to inquire about a plumbing problem they have been having with their toilet:

“I always have to hold down on the handle for my toilet to flush, why is this happening/can this be fixed?”

You are in luck, the answer is simple and this issue can be easily fixed. The chain connected to the flapper is too long. The chain should be no longer than ½ an inch longer than the handle arm at rest.

How to fix:

When the handle trip lever is all the way down on the inside of the toilet, remove the chain and hold it alongside the trip lever arm. Then, move the clip from the chain (fits in the holes of the trip lever) so it does not rise more than ½ an inch above the arm. Re-attach and flush to ensure that it is working properly.

If this does not work, the flapper is most likely water logged or broken. In either case, it will need to be replaced.

Water Conservation Tips

Monday, March 9th, 2009 by Ray Lee Master Plumbers

Water conservation is an extremely important Raleigh plumbing-related issue. Below are some residential plumbing conservation tips to follow:

• Toilets consume more than 40% of your total water usage. Installing a new toilet flapper and fill valve will keep your toilet running efficiently. If you need help, search online for " Fix Toilet Seattle " and click on the Roto-Rooter to schedule service online or to find your local Roto-Rooter branch.

• A dripping faucet can waste as much as 150 gallons of water each day, or 4,500 gallons per month. Repair the faucet and save water to reduce your water bill. If you need plumbing help, search online for " Faucet Repair Seattle " or " Leaky Faucet Seattle " and click on the Roto-Rooter website to schedule online or to find your local Roto-Rooter branch.
