Roto-Rooter prepares for the ‘cloggiest’ day of the year

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 by Paul Abrams

The day after Thanksgiving is the single busiest day of the year for Roto-Rooter’s residential plumbers. Big holiday meal preparation and cleanup mean lots of grease and food go down the kitchen drain into the garbage disposal. Holiday guests require additional clothes washing, showers and toilet flushes, all of which put a strain on household plumbing.

Often, a house already has partially clogged drains that aren’t noticeable until holiday guests arrive and overwhelm the system and virtually every traditional Thanksgiving dish is an ideal clog culprit if it goes down the drain.

Incoming calls to Roto-Rooter, mostly for kitchen plumbing jobs, will jump 50% over an average Friday. The four-day Thanksgiving weekend represents a 21% increase over any other Thursday through Sunday period of the year. But we at Roto-Rooter will have enough plumbers on duty to handle the extra demand.

By following these recommendations, Thanksgiving hosts can avoid a visit from their plumber over the holiday weekend:

·         Never pour fats or cooking oils down drains. They solidify in pipes. Instead, wipe grease from pots with paper towels and throw in trash.

·         No stringy, fibrous or starchy waste in the garbage disposal (poultry skins, celery, fruit & potato peels). Disposals can’t sufficiently grind these items.

·         Make sure the disposal is running when you put food into it. Don’t wait until it’s full to turn it on.

·         Wait ten minutes between showers so slow drains have time to do their job.

·         Never flush cotton balls, swabs, hair or facial scrub pads down a toilet. They don’t dissolve and they cause clogs.

If you need a plumber, call before the holiday to avoid delays and holiday service charges. While our company-owned locations no longer charge extra for nights, weekends or holidays, this is not always the case with some independent Roto-Rooter franchises. I'm pretty sure that's why we get fewer calls on Thanksgiving Day but we get slammed the very next day. Either way, we'll be available for any emergency service as your 24 hour plumbing company.

If you need us and want to schedule service on-line, click here to be taken to our on line scheduling system.

Great Service

A customer recently sent in a nice testimonial about the good work the South St. Paul plumbers from Roto-Rooter did for her:

"Recently I had a floor drain backing up. I called Roto-Rooter and they sent over a South St. Paul plumber to take care of the issue. Technician #654 came to my house very promptly and while looking over the situation he noticed that there were multiple plumbing problems that needed to be resolved. He made his recommendations and after discussing them with me he proceeded to accomplish the tasks in a most professional manner.

We had a couple of minor kitchen plumbing jobs that he solved quickly and he also took care of a clogged drain problem. I was relieved to find out that I didn’t need a sewer repair, but some of our branch lines just a good drain cleaning. I hope we never have this problem again but if we do please send technician #654 back to hour home."

We always like to hear from our customers. We especially like to get compliments like Sylvia’s. Who doesn’t? But, if we make a mistake, we want to hear about it so we can make it right.

Happy Roto Rooter Customer

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 by Roto Rooter Bloggers

We received a great compliment from a new customer recently. He was very pleased when he called Roto-Rooter on Saturday and a St. Louis Plumber from our office responded immediately. Here’s the testimonial he sent in:

"I called several St. Louis plumbing companies on Saturday only to discover that most aren’t open on weekends or they just have an answering machine or a service taking calls. I didn’t have time to wait a couple of hours for someone to call me back. We made an emergency call to Roto-Rooter and a real person answered the phone, listened to me explain our problem then dispatched a well qualified St. Louis plumber.

Glen from Roto-Rooter responded within the hour, and shortly thereafter our plumbing and drain problems were resolved! Glen knew his stuff and handled the kitchen plumbing job within twenty minutes before going to work on our sewer repair. It was clogged with roots and debris and nothing was draining properly. Everything works great now though! We really appreciate the prompt response and very professional job by Glen. We will highly recommend Glen and Roto-Rooter."

St. Louis, MO

That’s the kind of letter that makes our day at Roto-Rooter. I’ve said it before, Roto-Rooter is the "911 of the plumbing world." Emergency service is our specialty and there’s not extra charge if we come out at night, weekends or holidays.

Last week a customer called the Sunnyvale, California Roto-Rooter office to compliment the level of service we had provided her. She mentioned it was really hard to find honest Sunnyvale plumbers. She had called another plumbing company and was quoted and exorbitant amount of money to solve a plumbing problem she didn’t really have.

She decided to get a second opinion and looked for another Sunnyvale plumbing company. She called Roto-Rooter Plumbing of Sunnyvale, California and we had a plumber at her house within the hour. When the plumber arrived he noticed there was a problem and proceeded to call a camera technician to inspect the clogged sewer pipe to help diagnose the problem. After all was done we gave her a quote for a sewer repair at a fraction of what the other company quoted. She called the very next day and she said, “I want to thank your plumbers for the excellent service they provided, for being honest and for not trying to rob my wallet.”

She has since had us do the work and is a happy and satisfied customer. We hope she’ll be a good customer for years to come, whether she needs a bathroom plumbing solution, kitchen plumbing jobs or just help with a clogged drain. The Roto-Rooter Plumbing Sunnyvale office is proud to have experienced Sunnyvale plumbers that strive to give the highest level of service and ensure every customer is satisfied.

Roto-Rooter Plumbers Customer Survey .

Friday, October 16th, 2009 by Roto Rooter Bloggers

Roto-Rooter Plumber received a positive customer comment recently that I'd like to share:

How a sewer line is excavated and repaired using traditional digging methods"The Minneapolis plumbers at Roto-Rooter were very helpful with my plumbing emergency from start to end. The crew did a great job handling our sewer repair. Thank you. I know who to call for my all of my plumbing emergencies from now on. Roto-Rooter is my Minneapolis plumbing company of choice."

During her emergency, we noticed a problem with her main sewer line. We sent out a sewer solution specialist to locate the problem underground. Our Technician noticed an offset and other breaks in her main line, which we fixed with an excavation. We know that it's reassuring for our customers to have a Minneapolis Plumbing company that has all the tools to get the job done, whether it's a sewer cleaning, complete sewer repair, kitchen plumbing jobs or a simple faucet repair in the bathroom.

"Daniel was great. His personality and knowledge is  outstanding. This was my first time needing plumbing service calls of this type but if needed again, I will definitely call Roto-Rooter again and request Daniel. He is a great asset to the company. Yes, there are lots of local Hawaii plumbing companies in the phone book but there is only one plumbing contractor for me!"

Joe the Plumber

Friday, September 25th, 2009 by Roto Rooter Bloggers

I was really thankful to hear from a customer who called us looking for a Streamwood plumbing company to handle his residential plumbing job. Roto-Rooter covers Streamwood, Illinois and all the suburbs. Here's part of his letter:

"Joe the plumber, who came out to our home to fix our kitchen sink backup, was great. He arrived at our home at the time that your telephone customer representative said he would. Joe identified the problem, explained what he was going to do to fix it and what the charges were going to be. He even completely checked all of our plumbing fixtures free! Most importantly, there were no surprises. He did exactly what he said he was going to do for the cost that that he quoted up front. We have a few Streamwood plumbers to choose from but I can't imagine any of them would give me better service than Joe provided. I will call Roto-Rooter for all my residential plumbing problems in the future."

Gerry M.
Streamwood, IL

Gerry brought up an important point in his letter. When Joe checked all of the plumbing fixtures in the home, it was part of Roto-Rooter's complete plumbing inspection. We're already in your home so why not make sure your entire plumbing system is operating properly? We may find a problem we can fix without the customer having to pay for another service call in the near future.

Roto-Rooter of Palo Alto gets all sorts of compliments from satisfied customers. This one in particular loved the service they got from one of our best Palo Alto plumbers. I'm pleased to share this customer testimonial:

"On September 15, 2009, we had a kitchen plumbing job done at our home in Palo Alto, California. My husband and I wanted to let you know that "Q" is the best Palo Alto plumber we have ever had! He came out, gave us a quote, and the following week we scheduled the local plumbing job. He was on time, worked efficiently, explained what he was doing, and completed the work within the time frame he had estimated. It doesn't get any better than that! We felt the plumbing service was excellent and the price was within our budget. We have used other Palo Alto plumbers previously; however, we will now recommend Roto-Rooter to all of our friends."

A Kitchen Sink Solution

Thursday, August 20th, 2009 by Ray Lee Master Plumbers

A customer wrote in after going through 3 water faucets in less than a year. The water would stop flowing out of the faucet but the sprayer functioned normally. Through much trial and error they still remained stumped; the water was working but would not go through the faucet nozzles. Surely, they are not the only ones who have been struggling with sink plumbing issues of this nature.

From past experience with kitchen plumbing jobs, this is fairly common.  It sounds like there is probably a lot of debris in the water.  As debris flows through the aerator at the end of the faucet it begins to block the tiny holes to mix the air and water, which creates a soft stream of water.

A couple of suggestions:

  • Try removing the aerator from the end of the spout and clean it out.
  • Installation of a sand filter on the supply lines to the faucet/ house.

Aerators are little strainers screwed into the end of faucets. They can be removeded by unthreading counterclockwise. At the back end of the strainer there is a very small opening designed to restrict the flow of water to conservation standards and to insert air to help prevent water from splashing. They commonly can get clogged, which reduces the pressure available to the faucet. It is a good idea to clean the aerators annually to improve the functionality of your faucet.

Book signing draws 1000 Ghost Hunters fans

Monday, August 17th, 2009 by Paul Abrams

Roto-Rooter teamed up with TV's Ghost Hunters on a book recently. Chilling Tales from the Porcelain Seat features stories from Roto-Rooter plumbers across America. Believe me, these guys have seen it all. From clogged bathtub drains Baltimore to broken kitchen plumbing in Tacoma.

Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, real life Roto-Rooter service technicians in Providence, Rhode Island. They contributed to the book and were in Cincinnati on August 7the for a book signing. Fans asked them about the show but they also had plumbing questions about kitchen plumbing jobs and one guy told them about an adventure he had trying to do his own sewer repair.

In all, about a thousand Ghost Hunters fans showed up. Most of them got copies of the book, which Jason and Grant autographed. Maybe the book and the book signing will finally put to rest the rumors that the guys aren't real Roto-Rooter men.

Roto-Rooter and REIA

Friday, July 10th, 2009 by Jennifer Canavan

I recently went to the National Real Estate Investor's Association's mid-year conference in San Antonio.  Before attending, I wasn't too familiar with the association, so in addition to promoting our partnership benefits to REIA presidents and board members, I learned as much as possible in two days about the association.

They are a really neat group to work with, and they sure do know how to have fun!  This group invests in residential and commercial properties, fixes them up and either rents the properties or sells them.  These days we all know it's not as easy to flip properties, so many of them are being rented.  The group is all about education so that it's members can make the most of their investments.

Where Roto-Rooter comes into play is when a property is purchased, one of the first things that needs to be taken care of is the plumbing and drains.  REIA members will call Roto-Rooter for anything from sewer repair to kitchen plumbing jobs, at 10% off*.  Many of them have said they only call Roto-Rooter because we provide 24 hour plumbing with no additional charge for nights, weekends, or holidays.  We get the job done right the first time, and we are extremely reliable.  It was good to hear all of the kudos from the REIA members.  I am very excited to work with this group.  They have been absolutely friendly and extremely helpful as we're forming this new partnership at both the national and local levels.  Thanks REIA!

Roto-Rooter on Social Networks

Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 by Paul Abrams

We're Roto-Rootering our way through the social networks in the Web 2.0 world. You won't have to look far to get advice on kitchen plumbing jobs on our blogs, Tweets about where to find coupons on Twitter, information about the science of sewer cleaning on Facebook or a local page or two on MySpace.

The point is that we're trying to go where you are, not to be a spammer but a helpful friend that is easy to find when you need a friend most...like say when the commercial plumbing fails in a bottling plant on a Sunday afternoon or when someone is dealing with a leaky faucet in Baltimore. Social networks are just another way to stay within easy reach. After all, shouldn't a 24 hour plumbing company be highly accessible?

Follow us at Twitter under @RotoRooter and here's our main page on Facebook. You'll even find a Roto-RooterTV channel on YouTube where you can see pet rescues, old commercials and instructional videos for DIYers. Then check out our photos on Flickr
