How to Get Rid of Problem Tree Roots

One problem that often plaques homeowners and usually requires professional assistance from licensed plumbing specialists is when tree roots enter the underground piping.  While most construction companies have moved from A Pipe Cross-Section at the Onset of Root Takeoverclay or cast iron to plastic pipes, a more root-resistant material, powerful roots from large trees can still gain entry to residential plumbing as well as commercial plumbing.

In dealing with bothersome roots, there are two options:

-         Reline or replace the network of underground pipes

-         Have the pipes regularly cleaned and maintained

Both repairs will be expensive: replacing or relining the pipes will treat the problem all at once with one, large expense while the latter solution would cost you money annually.

Because Roto-Rooter offers 24 hour plumbing, we can take your plumbing service calls day or night and help treat your root-related plumbing problems around the clock.

Keeping up with the freeze

Monday, January 19th, 2009 by Paul Abrams

Columbus plumbers for Roto-Rooter were pretty busy the past few days, as were their fellow service technicians throughout Ohio and much of the country. Frozen pipes continue to plague residential plumbing and commercial plumbing due to this Arctic blast. Kitchen plumbing jobs are amassing because kitchen water lines usually run through outside walls and can freeze if not well insulated.

Roto-Rooter's Columbus, Ohio Branch had to purchase additional pipe thawing equipment Friday just to keep up with demand. As frustrating as frozen pipes can be, the real problems will begin when the temperatures rise and frozen pipes start thawing and spewing water. That's when our phones will really start ringing. This type of plumbing repair can be challenging and may require a pro. Tip: Find your main water shut-off valve so you will know how to turn off water if one of your pipes bursts.

Cold will freeze pipes but it’s the wind chill you have to worry about

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009 by Paul Abrams

The weather forecast for the upper Midwest calls for extreme cold in the single digits and frigid wind chill near or below zero. Brrrr. Those are the magic ingredients for freezing pipes meaning busy times for a plumber. Minneapolis and St. Paul represent the epicenter of the arctic blast but at least they build their homes and commercial buildings with extra insulation to fend off the cold. They even bury their underground pipes deeper below the frost line.

The same cannot be said for Chicago, Indianapolis and Cincinnati. Plumbers there should start getting local plumbing jobs of the frozen pipe nature sometime tomorrow night if the weather forecast proves accurate. Plumbing service calls for frozen pipes always hit an upswing when conditions are right. Residential plumbing and commercial plumbing are equally vulnerable. You want advice? Insulate exposed pipes now. Use heat tape and allow warm air to circulate around pipes as much as possible.

Frozen pipes may be frustrating but the real agony comes when they thaw, revealing splits spewing high-pressure water all over your home. You might want to keep our number handy in case it happens to you. 1-800-GET-ROTO. Roto-Rooter is here to help...fast.

Commercial Plumbing Problems

Friday, November 21st, 2008 by Ray Lee Master Plumbers

I own a small shopping center in Philadelphia and the commercial plumbing is a mess. There are two restaurants in the complex, so we have to clean the line with snakes every three months or so. Should I use a jetter instead of a snake so the sewer cleaning will last longer?

Jetters will clean a sewer line better than a snake if the line is servicing restaurants. Jetters cut the grease and draw it back where it can be vacuumed out. Learn more about Roto-Rooter's water jetting service and watch a video.

You can also install a Time Flow Meter, which automatically injects enzyme drain cleaner treatments in to your line. This will keep the restaurant's grease from building up in the line and may prevent future backups. The enzyme eats the grease and turns it into a liquid and washes away when the water is turned on. Dayton in the fold

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008 by Paul Abrams

This morning Roto-Rooter Services Company acquired the formerly independent Roto-Rooter franchise in Dayton, Ohio. This is a significant acquisition since Dayton is about the last major metro market location in Ohio to become a company-owned location. Cincinnati, Columbus and Cleveland have been company-owned for many years. Dayton was a well run operation and not much will change as far as their local customers will see. They will continue to offer quality residential plumbing and commercial plumbing services as well as sewer cleaning and repair.

The Dayton Roto-Rooter serves a huge geographical area that includes 11 counties in southwestern Ohio. The quality field force of experienced plumbers and service technicians will remain intact and we're now getting the new Dayton Branch onto the same phone and computer systems to help them blend seamlessly into Roto-Rooter's corporate structure.

Good luck to Al Pierce Sr. who ran the Dayton franchise for so many years but who felt it was time for retirement. Roto-Rooter also just acquired the Colorado Springs, Colorado franchise and is implementing that location into our Contractors division.

Familiar Seattle Rain Returns

Monday, November 17th, 2008 by Paul Abrams

When we think of Seattle, most of us think of rain. But this has been kind of a Service technician inspects sump pumpdry season for the Pacific Northwest, and conversely a "dry season" in terms of business demand for Seattle plumbers. Plumber Tacoma too. Plumbing repair companies that replace lots of sump pumps and handle sewer repair work and sewer cleaning to remedy flooded basements, found themselves high and dry this fall at a time when they would prefer to be low and wet. Low in the basements and wet from water. But not many homeowners in the Seattle-Tacoma area were complaining. After all, those jobs cost money and these days extra cash is in short supply for most families.

But alas, the rains have returned. Last week saw normally tame rivers flooding beyond their banks and the abnormally dry ground became saturated once again. Looks like the humble plumber Seattle is once again going to be a man in demand if the rains continue. Commercial plumbing as well as residential plumbing services should begin returning to their normal paces if the rain sticks around, for better or for worse.

Plumbing problems are never convenient for the homeowner but scheduling 24 hour plumbing service is as easy as pointing a clicking your mouse, using Roto-Rooter's EZ schedule tool on the web site. Finally, a plumber who will work around your schedule whether at seven in the morning, nine at night or any other time that works for you.

Does your business need a reliable plumber?

Thursday, November 13th, 2008 by Paul Abrams

Commercial plumbing just got a whole lot more competitive. So did residential plumbing repair for that matter. The collapse of the housing market and the subsequent slowdown of new home construction put lots of plumbers out of steady jobs working for home builders. Now a flood of new construction plumbing contractors is competing with established plumbing repair companies for a piece of the repair and replacement pie.

So what's the problem, you might ask? Isn't competition good for the consumer? To a point, yes. But consumers need to be aware that warranty, liability insurance and licensing are the three key words to keep at top of mind when hiring a plumber at your business. If something goes wrong, you don't want to have to track down some guy who works out of his house and moves often. Good luck getting that plumber to honor his warranty. And if he starts a fire at your business or causes a flood, you want to know that he has sufficient insurance so you're not on the hook for any damage.

Sometimes that seemingly great price quoted by Mr. Fly by night doesn't take into account the risks involved. Look, there are plenty of great independent plumbers who play by the rules and will do a fine job...but don't be naive when hiring. Insist that the company is fully licensed and get references. Or just call a name that has stood the test of time and has a reputation for reliability and professionalism. If you're the decision maker, that line translates into 'no worries.'

How to Remove a Commercial Toilet

Friday, November 7th, 2008 by Ray Lee Master Plumbers

"How do you remove a commercial toilet? It does not have a water tank but instead a water pipe coming out of the wall going to the bowl." was the commercial plumbing question I received today.

To remove the toilet, first shut off the water to the toilet. If you are removing the toilet permanently, shut the water off to the building. If you are only removing the toilet temporarily, shut the water off to the stop. It's the turn that comes out of the wall. This pipe has a small screwdriver shutoff under the chrome cap.

Once the water is shut off, you can simply unthread the pipes from the top of the toilet, disconnect the floor bolts on each side and lift it off the floor.

Should you need help, our licensed plumbing specialists are fully equipted to handle any size commercial job. We do plumbing repair and replacement.

Plumber Long Island – A New York State of Mind

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008 by Paul Abrams

There is an abundance of local plumbing companies serving Long Island, New York. It's a busy place with myriad of businesses and residences requiring a wide variety of plumbing services. Long Island is one of those places where a plumber had better be good and had better offer 24 hour plumbing or hang it up. New Yorkers want good service and they want it now!

Serving a commercial business on Long IslandRoto-Rooter has three different branches serving the Greater New York area and the Long Island Branch is dedicated exclusively to Nassau, Queens and Suffolk counties. They are experts in residential plumbing, commercial plumbing and sewer cleaning.

Long Island plumbing repair work is all over the map in terms of what customers expect. Some of the New York infrastructure is pretty old so sewer repairs and sewer replacement are somewhat common. Then again, the branch gets lots of kitchen plumbing jobs and calls about bathroom sink plumbing problems. New York has pretty strict licensing requirements and Roto-Rooter follows them to the letter. Additionally, the branch is fully staffed on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. If you need a plumber on Long Island, nobody matches Roto-Rooter in terms of capabilities, experience and compliance with licensing and insurance regulations.

Pittsburgh Plumbers Offering More Services

Monday, November 3rd, 2008 by Paul Abrams

A Pittsburgh plumber at the local Roto-Rooter Branch sent me some information about their plumbing service capabilities. They have really diversified to better handle any and all local plumbing jobs. They have become the most capable of the local plumbing companies when it comes to CCTV sewer line inspection Pittsburgh and line location due to the addition of new high-tech equipment and employee training.

Video line inspection service offered by Pittsburgh BranchThe branch's Jet-Vac services are also second to none among plumbing contractors in Pittsburgh. Name a plumbing repair and those guys can handle it quickly and professionally. The same can be said for sewer line cleaning Pittsburgh. They have modern cable machines and high pressure water jetting equipment that is suitable for residential or commercial plumbing applications.

I mentioned their new pump truck recently too. The truck is getting lots of use, especially for septic tank pumping / hauling and commercial grease trap pumping. It's important to note that they are licensed plumbing specialists offering 24 hour plumbing service throughout Pittsburgh and the outlying local counties.

Commercial Plumbing Problem – Urinals

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008 by Ray Lee Master Plumbers

If you have a urinal that will not flush and overflows, it may be calcium build up.

Calcium build up in the trap will prevent the urinal from discharging as much water as the flush valve will allow. Or it could be that calcium and other minerals have reduced the actual diameter of the pipe. When this happens, water will back up because of the restricted flow.

Have licensed plumbing specialists scrape the pipe clean by using cutting blades. You can clean urinal traps by soaking them in vinegar over night. The vinegar will dissolve and remove the calcium and minerals.

As an ongoing preventative maintenance, you may want to purchase a drain care product that dissolves calcium. Also, Roto-Rooter Urinal Blocks deodorize and eliminate calcium build up inside drain lines. Each 4 once block lasts for approximately 500 flushes.

Roto-Rooter can assist in your commercial plumbing needs.

Joe the plumber

Thursday, October 16th, 2008 by Paul Abrams

In the final presidential debate last night, "Joe the plumber" came up multiple times as an example of a regular guy trying to get ahead in a tough economy. It seems Joe has worked at a plumbing company in Ohio for many years and would like to buy the plumbing business from his boss. The subject begs the question, how well can a guy do in a plumbing career? A competent Joe who can handle commercial plumbing, residential plumbing and sewer cleaning can do quite well.

Admittedly, times got a lot tougher for just about every service company out there due to the recession, plumbers included. However, plumbing is a very stable career in good times and bad. Plumbing is always going to break and plumbers will be needed to make the necessary plumbing repairs. Plumbers in new construction are seeing quite a drop off in business with the stall in the housing market but plumbing repair companies haven't been impacted as much by the souring economy.

Journeymen plumbers with 2-10 years experience as a plumber's helper usually earn in excess of $32 an hour, according to national labor statistics. A hard working Joe who saved his money and maintained a good credit rating could find himself in a position to buy out his boss someday and take over a plumbing services company. Good plumbers are in short supply so the rule of supply and demand tells us a good plumber can earn an above average income. At least one news story mentioned that Joe, the plumber who caused all the commotion in the debate apparently worked for one of our independent Roto-Rooter franchises in Alaska several years ago.

Types of sewer pipes had varying degrees of success

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008 by Paul Abrams

After a recent conversation with a plumber in DC / Baltimore, I thought it might beOrangeburg pipe - this ad exagerrates its root-proof qualities good to blog about pipes and how plumbing contractors deal with the different kinds. Let's begin with materials used for sewer pipes. The most notorious is Orangeburg pipe, also known as fibre conduit pipe. It was a tar paper-like material used for sewers from the 1860s through the 1970s. It enjoyed a resurgence during World War II when better materials were rationed for the war effort. There's plenty of it still in service though not reliably. The flimsy material was easily infiltrated by tree roots and it didn't respond well to cleaning from a Roto-Rooter machine.

Cast iron pipes are tough and reliable. Today you'll find it in more commercial plumbing applications than residential plumbing. But plumbers still see lots of cast iron in older homes. It resists corrosion and can last 100 years or more under ideal conditions but it can and will fail.

Stack of PVC pipePVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) or "plastic pipe" is the most common material used today for household drainpipes and vents. It comes in a wide variety of sizes and is durable and reliable for drain and sewer lines. Plumbing contractors love how its joints fit tightly together to resist root intrusion. It can be quickly repaired and will provide years of trouble-free service. The good news is that if you ever need a sewer line replacement, the plumbing contractor will almost certainly install PVC sewer lines. Next we'll discuss materials use for water supply lines.

Hurricane Plumbers

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008 by Paul Abrams

Hurricane season rarely ever seriously impact the Midwest but Ike did. Here in Cincinnati where Roto-Rooter's home office resides, we caught the back end of Hurricane Ike and he blew into town with winds over 74 MPH. Some of the TV Hurricane Katrinastations recorded 84 MPH. It's not unexpected when Florida and the southeastern coastal states get hit by hurricanes and sometimes even New York, Philadelphia and Boston get hurricane visits too -- but not Cincinnati, Louisville and Columbus. Licensed Plumbers are among the service professionals who help put things back in place after such storms fixing sump pumps, broken pipes, water heaters and any imaginable plumbing repair, whether it involves residential plumbing or commercial plumbing and drain service.

There are some significant things to remember when your home is in the path of a hurricane or major storm packing wind, flooding and a potential knock-out punch that could take utilities off-line. First, remember that you want to ensure that storm water is channeled away from your house as quickly as possible. That means ensuring that your gutters and downspouts aren't clogged and are working properly. Second, check to make sure any floor drains on patios, garages, car ports and in the yard are working properly. If they aren't you are inviting a flood.

Also, if you are riding out the storm at home, close the water supply valve coming into the home just before the storm hits your area. This isolates the water in your taps and water heater from what could soon be potentially contaminated water in the city supply. Once the storm passes and the water is deemed safe, turn it back on. But if the water in the city lines is contaminated, you will have a tankful of safe, clean water in your water heater that will come in very handy in the aftermath of a storm. Remember that plumbing services are available anytime from Roto-Rooter. We are the 24-hour plumbing company specializing in emergency plumbing from Boston to Houston and everywhere else in the country.

Cleveland kitten rescue – thanks for the mail!

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008 by Paul Abrams

Roto-Rooter is on a record pace for cat rescues this year. Yes, our Cleveland Branch rescued another kitten last Friday in Brecksville, Ohio. The kitten iskitten in pipe as seen on remote video monitor believed to be about ten weeks old. Someone left an access cover off of an eight inch pipe behind a health care center and the curious stray kitty crawled inside.

The rescue took about six hours and lots of patience because every effort to nab the kitty or force it to an exit was foiled by the clever kitten who simply jumped over our camera snake in the big eight inch pipe. Finally, the  commercial plumbing technicians used a hydro jet to gently but forcibly push the kitten down the pipe to a manhole where a plumber captured it. A large crowd of bystanders gave the crew quite an ovation and the media covered the rescue as well.

Rescue crew with kitten in handThe mail from people all over North America has been encouraging and thankful. The recurring message from the mail was "thank you for having a heart and putting goodwill ahead of profit." We appreciate all the great mail and the repeated pledges to use Roto-Rooter the next time plumbing services are required.

The kitten visited a vet and was treated for parasites. He was adopted by one of his Roto-Rooter rescuers and named "Roto." By all accounts, he's living the high life now with a family that loves him.

Cameras are our eyes in the pipe

Friday, July 25th, 2008 by Paul Abrams

Technician using camera to inspect sewer pipeSewer inspection video cameras have been around for several years now. First used strictly by wealthy municipalities and utility companies, costs have dropped in recent years to the point that even small local plumbing companies might have one in their inventory.

Roto-Rooter has played a major role in the proliferation of this technology. The company continually invests in cutting edge tools that make work easier and more efficient. Every Roto-Rooter branch and all of our plumbing contractors own at least a few. Now Roto-Rooter is purchasing more of them in an effort to get a camera on almost every service van.

Why? Company-owned Roto-Rooters are going to inspect every main sewer pipe suspected of having a break or major crack. The inspection will come at no extra charge during a normal service call involving sewer cleaning. Why? Because cameras give the customer visual confirmation that the residential or commercial plumbing job really needs to be performed. It goes well beyond a plumber saying "take my word for it, you need a sewer repair or replacement."

Plumbing problems can be expensive to repair and Roto-Rooter wants to ensure our customers that our diagnosis is accurate so they can make informed decisions about their plumbing problems.

Commercial Plumbing Service

Monday, July 21st, 2008 by Paul Abrams

Commercial plumbing and drain cleaning represents about half of Roto-Rooter'sServing a commercial business overall business. Residential plumbing repair and sewer cleaning make up the other half. We've formed some strong relationships with large, national and regional businesses who want to do business with a single plumbing company instead of multiple local plumbing companies. Why? Because Roto-Rooter can take care of all plumbing services, sewer repair and sewer cleaning, coast to coast for grocery chains, restaurant chains, bottling plants, ice cream stores, etc.

Roto-Rooter Services Company owns 50 branch locations, mostly in large metro areas, employing plumbers in Boston, Chicago, Houston and many others. The company also owns over sixty contractor locations in small to medium sized cities such as Little Rock, Boulder and Lexington, Kentucky. And there are more than 500 independent Roto-Rooter franchises throughout the U.S. and Canada in cities of every size. Together, they make up the Roto-Rooter system and it is unrivaled in size or scope of plumbing services offered. No other company handles as many plumbing repairs or sewer cleaning jobs as Roto-Rooter.

Our commercial customers cite consistency of services and billing as major benefits of dealing with Roto-Rooter. 24 hour plumbing services available seven days a week is another obvious factor. After all, when your business is idle because you need a plumbing repair or your sewer is backing up, you're losing money with every passing minute. We get it and that's why so many commercial businesses call Roto-Rooter when they need plumbing services.

Commercial Plumbing Services

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008 by Paul Abrams

Roto-Rooter is the largest provider of complete commercial plumbing repair and commercial sewer cleaning. A lot of people I talk with seem genuinely surprised to learn that Roto-Rooter does commercial plumbing work. Most people tend to think of us as just a residential drain cleaning company. Quite a few people still don't realize that we offer plumbing services at all beyond the drain and sewer cleaning services that made us famous.

As a matter of fact, Roto-Rooter is the plumber of choice for many of the major restaurant chains, grocery stores and even, food plants, soft drink bottling plants and breweries. We offer services ranging from grease trap pumping and maintenance to water jetting, boiler repair, water service line installation and repair and much more. As a matter of fact, no commercial plumbing job is too big or too small for Roto-Rooter. Surprised? I thought you might be. If you manage a business, large or small, and you want to do business with a plumber you can trust to provide 24 hour plumbing, 365 days a year, please check out the Roto-Rooter web site to learn more about us.

Has Sewer Cleaning Advanced?

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008 by Paul Abrams

Long before Roto-Rooter began offering a vast array of plumbing services and sewer repair options, it was sewer cleaning that was our bread and butter. Sewer cleaning is what built Roto-Rooter into the company it is today and sewer cleaning remains close to 50% of our business. It's not glamorous but it is a service in demand! If you've ever had a sink or toilet that wouldn't drain then you know the feeling of true helplessness. Especially when not even a plunger can resolve the problem.

How has the task of drain cleaning changed since Samuel Blanc built his first Roto-Rooter sewer cleaning machine in 1933? Not much! The fact is that most clogged sewer mains are still opened and cleaned with a spinning cable machine equipped with sharp blades on the tip that cut their way through clogs. Oh, the machines are safer and more reliable but the basic mechanics haven't changed and the Roto-Rooter machines work as well today as they did in the 1930s when Roto-Rooter was quickly becoming a household name.

The single biggest breakthrough in sewer cleaning came with the invention of high-pressure water jetting, sometimes called hydro-jetting. Roto-Rooter uses this technique mostly for commercial plumbing and municipal applications but they are occasionally pressed into service on really tough residential sewer cleaning jobs as well.

Home Plumbing Projects

Friday, June 6th, 2008 by Paul Abrams

Well, I am back from vacation and ready to take on those nagging projects around the house that need to be done. In particular, I am planning to finish my basement. I intend to build a family entertainment room, a kitchenette, some closet space, a storage area and the all-important extra bathroom. I only installed a half-bath in my last basement, a simple toilet and vanity sink. But after only a few months and a few house guests staying down there, I regretted not putting in a full bath and shower. So with this new basement I want to explore all bathroom plumbing solutions ahead of time so there will be no regrets when the project is finished.

I should mention that I am not a licensed plumber, although I occasionally play one in Roto-Rooter yellow pages ads. And even though I am not a plumber, I am a pretty good handyman with lots of home improvement skills. Working for Roto-Rooter, I am fortunate to work with lots of licensed plumbing specialists who are always happy to offer advice and expertise.

That being the case, I plan to most of the plumbing jobs that I am familiar with such as setting the toilet, hooking up the tub and sink drains and framing in all of the walls around the tub enclosure. Fortunately, the bathroom drains are already roughed-in for me in the basement so I won't need to bust up any concrete.

Now comes the hard part: running water supply lines to the tub, sink and toilet. This is an area in which I am not very comfortable. I know my limitations when it comes to plumbing repair and installation. As in my last basement, I will hire Roto-Rooter to run my copper water supply lines to the new bathroom. It is extremely important that this job be done right. Once those supply lines are pressurized, they need to hold the pressure without any surprise leaks that could melt away the drywall I'll be installing later. And with Roto-Rooter, I know that I am covered by their guarantee if something goes wrong.

There is a certain feeling of comfort that comes with a good guarantee and not all plumbing companies have strong guarantees. Heck, some of them aren't even insured so what am I supposed to do if they damage my home? That is never a concern with Roto-Rooter. I could tell you about Plumber Houston. A relative used him back in Texas. He did cheap work but operated without insurance, permits or guarantees. Yeah that should definitely scare the heck out of you to have a guy like that handling your residential plumbing repairs.

Of course, Roto-Rooter will get all of the proper permits I need to stay in compliance with local building codes and plumbing codes. I have enough to worry about so that too is very comforting.

If you have any basement plumbing issues that you need to address, why not tackle them this summer? After all the basement is nice and cool and not a bad place to be on a hot day. If you start working then discover that you are in over your head when it comes to plumbing repair, don't feel too proud to call in a professional plumber. It will cost you less in time and aggravation to just hire a pro.

Roto-Rooter is happy to pick up where you left off on a plumbing repair job. Our plumbing contractors do it all the time and they won't rub it in and make you feel inept. So if you find yourself doing some sink plumbing and you hook up a water line that starts spewing at the fitting, don't waste your weekend dealing with troublesome plumbing problems, just call 1-800-GET-ROTO or schedule service on line here at the Roto-Rooter web site. And if costs are a concern, don't forget to download a Roto-Rooter coupons to save yourself a few bucks.
