For many of us in the Cincinnati area, it is pumpkin carving time. Here at Roto-Rooter, your Cincinnati plumbing company of choice, we have a few key tips to avoid costly repair bills or damage from a backed up drain. The ideal scenario is to not carve directly in your sink. If you need or want to carve your pumpkin in your sink to avoid the mess, make sure you use some sort of a “strainer” device. This can be an actual drain strainer or you can use an improvised device such as newspaper laid out flat in the bottom of the sink, a large garbage bag that can work as a liner, or maybe a paper plate set over the drain opening.
If all of your precautions “go down the drain”, sorry but I couldn’t resist, there are a few actions you can take to try and help yourself. If you have pumpkin “guts” go into your disposer DO NOT run the disposer, it can make matters worse. n, run as much water as you can to force the debris down the line. The last thing you want is a clogged drain.
Remember to run the water for an extended period of time, you are trying to get it all the way out of the house, not just out of that sink drain. If your drain starts to back up during this process immediately shut of the water and give us a call, you are probably clogged and in need of an auger to clear your clog. A little caution and advanced planning will help keep the “treats” flowing and avoid the “tricks” of a clogged drain! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

This has been a cold new year in the Midwest. Temperatures have dropped below zero several times and some days we haven't climbed out of the teens. Wind chill, which is a primary factor in freezing pipes has been dreadful. I am so glad I winterized my plumbing back in early November. The frigid weather has been a boon for
local plumbing companies which have been otherwise slow since the
sewer cleaning rush around the holidays.
A couple of days ago, I snapped this picture of the hose bib on the back of my house. Note that there is no hose attached and the faucet is protected by a snow-covered insulation kit. That little kit probably cost me four bucks five years ago. Sure beats spending hundreds to pay a
Cincinnati plumber several hundred dollars to repair a burst pipe. These kits work! My residential plumbing has given me no problems and I've required not a single
plumbing repair.
The weather forecast for the upper Midwest calls for extreme cold in the single digits and frigid wind chill near or below zero. Brrrr. Those are the magic ingredients for freezing pipes meaning busy times for a plumber. Minneapolis and St. Paul represent the epicenter of the arctic blast but at least they build their homes and commercial buildings with extra insulation to fend off the cold. They even bury their underground pipes deeper below the frost line.
The same cannot be said for Chicago, Indianapolis and Cincinnati. Plumbers there should start getting local plumbing jobs of the frozen pipe nature sometime tomorrow night if the weather forecast proves accurate. Plumbing service calls for frozen pipes always hit an upswing when conditions are right. Residential plumbing and commercial plumbing are equally vulnerable. You want advice? Insulate exposed pipes now. Use heat tape and allow warm air to circulate around pipes as much as possible.

2009 is here and Roto-Rooter has produced its annual list of Top 5 Strangest Items Recovered from Drainpipes over the past year. As North America's largest provider of plumbing and drain cleaning services, Roto-Rooter has more than 4000 plumbing technicians from Boston to Austin and everywhere in between. Lots of plumbing companies probably find strange items but I doubt they find the wide variety of things we find every year.
Our list includes a 4-carat diamond ring recovered by a Cincinnati plumber in April. He had to dig up the basement floor to reach the pipe after locating it with a fiber-optic sewer inspection camera normally used for sewer repair work. The list also included two cats. The first was a Maine Coon kitty in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on April 26th. The second was a kitten rescued by a Columbus, Ohio plumber on June 19th. That kitten was suctioned out using a low power setting on a pumper truck normally used for cleaning out septic tanks and grease traps. But the cat wasn't actually sucked through the hosed. The service tech used a small hose in tandem with a sewer inspection camera to suction the little cat's hind quarter to the mouth of the hose just long enough to drag him out of the pipe 
unharmed.
The list also includes an amazing 94-foot long tree root extracted from a pipe by Bart Mathis, a Roto-Rooter Contractor from Sarasota, Florida. Bart made the list a few years ago for rescuing Zap, a tiny kitten from an underground conduit pipe. That 94-foot long root may be the longest on record for any of the plumbing contractors I'm aware of. That may also be the most effective sewer cleaning job ever completed. Finally, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, one of our licensed plumbing specialists pulled out a series of children's' toys that were responsible for a mysterious clog. The weather in Cincinnati got pretty cold over the weekend. We saw 16 degrees 
Fahrenheit Sunday. That's definitely cold enough to freeze pipes. But typically, low wind chill is required to freeze most pipes and we did not have any significant breezes accompanying our cold snap. That probably kept down the number of frozen pipes around here and the number of calls to local plumbing companies that fix them. Remember, once frozen, pipes are never the same. They become stressed and usuallly burst or leak simply because water turns to ice and expands. Something must give under such pressure, and copper, plastic or any other material will split.
Exposed pipes or those located inside outer walls with poor insulation are the most susceptible to freezing. Don't forget to open cabinet doors around sinks located against outside walls when the temperature drops into the low 20s and teens. Especially if you have any doubts about how well your walls 
are insulated.
Kitchen plumbing jobs will be a the most common sort of jobs plumbers will be dealing with throughout the rest of the year...unless we get some really cold temperatures between now and New Years Day. Typically, January and February are the months that usher in the coldest temperatures and the worst winter weather so those are the months when Cincinnati plumbers and those throughout the northeast and Midwest see the greatest number of frozen pipes. Use heat tape and insulation to protect your exposed pipes and don't forget to cover outside faucets (hose bibs) or you'll be asking for trouble.
I just had a conversation with a co-worker about water pressure. He inherited an old home from his parents and is modernizing it. His refurbishment plans included a lot of plumbing repair work. One of the main problems was a lack of water pressure. Showers were nearly impossible and toilets weren't flushing with enough power to carry away waste so the toilets were clogging often. It was obvious that the old place hadn't been visited by plumbing contractors in decades.
He contacted the Cincinnati plumber of choice, Roto-Rooter. He and I both work at the corporate headquarters downtown but we've come to know lots of the plumbers at the Cincinnati Roto-Rooter Branch office. My co-worker couldn't have been more pleased with the plumbing services he received. The house had been built with cast iron and steel water supply pipes. After all these years, the pipes had lots of mineral buildup on the interior walls and plenty of rust. The buildup essentially choked off most of the water flow, which was the cause of his water pressure problems.
Roto-Rooter replaced all of the old water supply lines with new copper lines. This made an immediate difference in the old home's water pressure. While they were there, he had them add two additional hose bibs on the outside of his house to make the use of a garden hose more convenient. Looks like the old house is on its way back.
