How to stop a running toilet

A customer recently wrote in about a common toilet issue. Whenever they flushed, it continued to run.  Many Aurora plumbers have dealt with this plumbing problem and surprisingly, it is actually quite easy to fix. It can even be a DIY type of project for those who are feeling a bit on the adventurous side.

There are only 2 reasons a toilet continues to run:

1. The flapper has failed & needs to be replaced

2. The fill valve is either set too high or the diaphragm is no longer sealing.

If you open the tank and the water is not filling higher than the central tube it is the flapper. All you need to do in this case is remove your flapper and bring it to a local hardware store to get an exact replacement.  If the water is filling above the central tube it is a fill valve issue, which can easily be purchased and replaced as well.
