Roto-Rooter prepares for the ‘cloggiest’ day of the year

Tuesday, November 24th, 2009 by Paul Abrams

The day after Thanksgiving is the single busiest day of the year for Roto-Rooter’s residential plumbers. Big holiday meal preparation and cleanup mean lots of grease and food go down the kitchen drain into the garbage disposal. Holiday guests require additional clothes washing, showers and toilet flushes, all of which put a strain on household plumbing.

Often, a house already has partially clogged drains that aren’t noticeable until holiday guests arrive and overwhelm the system and virtually every traditional Thanksgiving dish is an ideal clog culprit if it goes down the drain.

Incoming calls to Roto-Rooter, mostly for kitchen plumbing jobs, will jump 50% over an average Friday. The four-day Thanksgiving weekend represents a 21% increase over any other Thursday through Sunday period of the year. But we at Roto-Rooter will have enough plumbers on duty to handle the extra demand.

By following these recommendations, Thanksgiving hosts can avoid a visit from their plumber over the holiday weekend:

·         Never pour fats or cooking oils down drains. They solidify in pipes. Instead, wipe grease from pots with paper towels and throw in trash.

·         No stringy, fibrous or starchy waste in the garbage disposal (poultry skins, celery, fruit & potato peels). Disposals can’t sufficiently grind these items.

·         Make sure the disposal is running when you put food into it. Don’t wait until it’s full to turn it on.

·         Wait ten minutes between showers so slow drains have time to do their job.

·         Never flush cotton balls, swabs, hair or facial scrub pads down a toilet. They don’t dissolve and they cause clogs.

If you need a plumber, call before the holiday to avoid delays and holiday service charges. While our company-owned locations no longer charge extra for nights, weekends or holidays, this is not always the case with some independent Roto-Rooter franchises. I'm pretty sure that's why we get fewer calls on Thanksgiving Day but we get slammed the very next day. Either way, we'll be available for any emergency service as your 24 hour plumbing company.

Seattle Plumber Tips: Conserving water is everyone’s responsibility

Thursday, October 29th, 2009 by Roto Rooter Bloggers

Water is a precious resource, so we should all do our part to use less of it. I know water doesn’t seem to be in short supply especially in rainy areas, but it is. If your water bill seems higher than it used to be and you feel your house is using more water than it should be, hire a Seattle Plumber to do leak detection. Seattle is an area that gets a lot of rain and appears to have a healthy and abundant water supply, but one day may come when wet areas like Seattle need to pipe excess water to drier areas.

If you fix leaky faucets and toilets, you can easily save thousands of gallons of water per year.  Don’t wait, do that faucet repair. Tacoma and other Northwestern cities have the potential to save a significant amount of water simply by fixing various undiscovered leaks. This can also limit the implementation of more extreme measures like lawn watering restrictions, etc.

If you would like assistance with these pluming problems, Roto-Rooter has the right plumber from DC to California and every state in between. They’re your 24 hour plumbing provider and can provide leak detection services, faucet repairs, bathroom plumbing solutions and any other necessary Seattle plumbing and drain service.

Seattle Plumber is Ready for Return of Familiar Seattle Rains

Thursday, October 29th, 2009 by Roto Rooter Bloggers

When we think of Seattle, most of us think of rain. But this has been kind of a dry season for the Pacific Northwest, and conversely a "dry season" in terms of business demand for Seattle plumbers, Plumber Tacoma works too. Plumbing repair companies that replace lots of sump pumps and handle sewer repair work and sewer cleaning to remedy flooded basements, found themselves high and dry this fall at a time when they would prefer to be low and wet. But not many homeowners in the Seattle-Tacoma area were complaining. After all, those jobs are costly and these days extra cash is in short supply for most families.

But alas, the rains have returned. Last week saw normally tame rivers flooding beyond their banks and the abnormally dry ground became saturated once again. Looks like the humble Plumber Seattle is once again going to be a man in demand if the rain continues. Commercial plumbing as well as residential plumbing services should begin returning to their normal paces if the rain sticks around, for better or worse.

Plumbing problems are never convenient for the homeowner, but scheduling 24 hour plumbing service is as easy as pointing and clicking your mouse, using Roto-Rooter's EZ schedule tool on our web site. Finally, we've got a plumber who will work around your schedule whether at seven in the morning, nine at night or any other time that works for you.

Seattle Plumbers are one of Many Roto-Rooter Locations Available 24 Hours

Thursday, October 29th, 2009 by Roto Rooter Bloggers

A while back a post was written about 24 hour plumbing that discussed Roto-Rooter's availability. A few angry replies were received from people who said they were unable to get a response after normal business hours. Unfortunately, the writers did not mention their locations. In the interest of full disclosure, it is only fair to mention that there are over 500 Roto-Rooter independent franchise locations that are not owned and operated by Roto-Rooter Services Company, which owns and operates 115 of the largest branches in North America.

Not all of those franchises are in markets that profitably support 24-hour service, but the overwhelming majority of Roto-Rooter locations do provide repair service around the clock. Company-owned locations include most of major cities like, New York, Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, St. Louis, Houston, Atlanta, Baltimore and most relative to this post, the Roto-Rooter Seattle Plumbers are available anytime 7 days a week at any time. In addition, our largest independent franchises are 24-hour plumbing providers in many of the larger remaining cities such as, Los Angeles, San Diego, Dallas, Fort Worth, Detroit and many others.

So, in fact, there are essentially only a small number of Roto-Rooter locations that are not currently offering 24-hour plumbing services. If the locations aren't company owned, we cannot force operation hours upon the owners. We apologize for any inconvenience, but please be aware that no other plumbing company in the U.S. or Canada even comes close to doing as many after hours plumbing repair jobs as Roto-Rooter. We will continue to encourage all of our independent franchises to offer these services.

Happy Roto Rooter Customer

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009 by Roto Rooter Bloggers

We received a great compliment from a new customer recently. He was very pleased when he called Roto-Rooter on Saturday and a St. Louis Plumber from our office responded immediately. Here’s the testimonial he sent in:

"I called several St. Louis plumbing companies on Saturday only to discover that most aren’t open on weekends or they just have an answering machine or a service taking calls. I didn’t have time to wait a couple of hours for someone to call me back. We made an emergency call to Roto-Rooter and a real person answered the phone, listened to me explain our problem then dispatched a well qualified St. Louis plumber.

Glen from Roto-Rooter responded within the hour, and shortly thereafter our plumbing and drain problems were resolved! Glen knew his stuff and handled the kitchen plumbing job within twenty minutes before going to work on our sewer repair. It was clogged with roots and debris and nothing was draining properly. Everything works great now though! We really appreciate the prompt response and very professional job by Glen. We will highly recommend Glen and Roto-Rooter."

St. Louis, MO

That’s the kind of letter that makes our day at Roto-Rooter. I’ve said it before, Roto-Rooter is the "911 of the plumbing world." Emergency service is our specialty and there’s not extra charge if we come out at night, weekends or holidays.

Water Heater Maintenance

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009 by Ray Lee Master Plumbers

We get a lot of questions about water heaters—when and how to drain, how to remove, etc—so this post should cater to a large audience.

Draining your water heater:
A common Westchester plumbing request, is to replace the heating element in an electric heater. In order to replace the element, it is safest, although not necessary, to drain the water heater beforehand. You can read more about draining your heater here. Westchester plumbers of  Roto-Rooter recommend draining this appliance once every six months to prevent the buildup of calcium and minerals in the bottom of the tank.

When to replace your heater:
If you are having plumbing issues with your water heater and it is more than 10 to 15 years old, it is recommended to be replaced for a newer more energy-efficient model. For more information, check out this blog post.

Leaky water heater:
The cause of this problem is usually an old rubber gasket at the bottom of the heater. Check out this post to learn more.

Should you need the assistance of licensed plumbing specialists, Roto-Rooter’s 24 hour plumbing service ensures that someone will be there to answer your plumbing service calls around the clock! Roto-Rooter is always available for all your Westchester plumbing needs.

A New Process to Clean Out Mineral Build Up

Thursday, August 27th, 2009 by Ray Lee Master Plumbers

There is a brand new process called Pipe relining to remove calcium and minerals from the inside of your piping. This process is not available in every state, nor is it accepted by every code, but it soon should be. You can check with your local Indianapolis plumber to see if this process is acceptable.

Pipe relining forces a solution of a grinding compound through the pipes to break loose all calcium and mineral build up. It also forces a solution of epoxy coating into the pipes, which
then seals the inside to protect them from future build up.  Currently the cost of this process is just as expensive as pipe replacement, but there is no damage to surrounding walls and floors.

The alternative is to relining is to replace all of your existing piping with PEX or PVC, which is a more expensive endeavor. All walls must be broken open to install the new pipes and the costs can quickly add up. Pipe relining is a great process to take advantage of and is highly recommended.

For help with Indianapolis plumbing call, Roto-Rooter at 1-800-GET-ROTO for 24 hour plumbing services or visit our Web site for more information.

A Kitchen Sink Solution

Thursday, August 20th, 2009 by Ray Lee Master Plumbers

A customer wrote in after going through 3 water faucets in less than a year. The water would stop flowing out of the faucet but the sprayer functioned normally. Through much trial and error they still remained stumped; the water was working but would not go through the faucet nozzles. Surely, they are not the only ones who have been struggling with sink plumbing issues of this nature.

From past experience with kitchen plumbing jobs, this is fairly common.  It sounds like there is probably a lot of debris in the water.  As debris flows through the aerator at the end of the faucet it begins to block the tiny holes to mix the air and water, which creates a soft stream of water.

A couple of suggestions:

  • Try removing the aerator from the end of the spout and clean it out.
  • Installation of a sand filter on the supply lines to the faucet/ house.

Aerators are little strainers screwed into the end of faucets. They can be removeded by unthreading counterclockwise. At the back end of the strainer there is a very small opening designed to restrict the flow of water to conservation standards and to insert air to help prevent water from splashing. They commonly can get clogged, which reduces the pressure available to the faucet. It is a good idea to clean the aerators annually to improve the functionality of your faucet.

Back to School!

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009 by Jennifer Canavan

Wow, did summer fly by again!  I can't believe it's almost back to school time for my kids.

I was thinking earlier that the maintenance manager at my children's school must love summertime...  No plumbing problems or plumbing repairs due to kids clogging the toilets with too much toilet paper, or spinach from the lunch mom packed that they don't want to eat!

Most moms and dads, on the other hand, are probably happy to ship their little ones back to school to avoid these same issues!  Thankfully, there has only been one instance in my household of a kid-induced near plumbing crisis (knock on wood).  My son “accidentally” dropped my cell phone (thank goodness this was before I had my beloved iPhone) into the toilet before school one day.  I quickly retrieved the phone before it went down the drain, avoiding having to call a plumbing specialist (Roto-Rooter of course!).

So here's to the maintenance guys at schools all over the country who deal with our children's clogs all year long!  Thankfully Roto-Rooter provides emergency service 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to help these guys out!

Roto-Rooter and REIA

Friday, July 10th, 2009 by Jennifer Canavan

I recently went to the National Real Estate Investor's Association's mid-year conference in San Antonio.  Before attending, I wasn't too familiar with the association, so in addition to promoting our partnership benefits to REIA presidents and board members, I learned as much as possible in two days about the association.

They are a really neat group to work with, and they sure do know how to have fun!  This group invests in residential and commercial properties, fixes them up and either rents the properties or sells them.  These days we all know it's not as easy to flip properties, so many of them are being rented.  The group is all about education so that it's members can make the most of their investments.

Where Roto-Rooter comes into play is when a property is purchased, one of the first things that needs to be taken care of is the plumbing and drains.  REIA members will call Roto-Rooter for anything from sewer repair to kitchen plumbing jobs, at 10% off*.  Many of them have said they only call Roto-Rooter because we provide 24 hour plumbing with no additional charge for nights, weekends, or holidays.  We get the job done right the first time, and we are extremely reliable.  It was good to hear all of the kudos from the REIA members.  I am very excited to work with this group.  They have been absolutely friendly and extremely helpful as we're forming this new partnership at both the national and local levels.  Thanks REIA!

Heavy rains bring risk of flooded homes and basements

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009 by Debbie Smith

Flooded StreetIt’s a gray, rainy day in Cincinnati. The weather map shows heavy rain in parts of Texas, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Tennessee. It’s likely that rain will also hit other parts of the country.

Heavy rain accumulates quickly and often doesn’t absorb into the ground. The runoff can cause flooding in homes and basements. So, follow these simple tips to protect your property.

  • Ensure yard drains, culverts, downspouts and gutters are cleaned out, open and clear of debris so water is channeled away from the foundation.
  • Test floor drains in garages, bathrooms, basements and patios by pouring a gallon of water into them. If they don’t drain quickly, call a plumber.
  • If your home has a sump pump, pour a few buckets of water into the sump put pit to test operation. Call a plumber if the pump pit doesn’t empty.

If you experience flooding or any other plumbing or drain problem, you can rely on Roto-Rooter plumber Boston and plumber Salt Lake City and everywhere in between for fast, professional service. Roto-Rooter local plumbers and drain cleaners are only a call or click away for sewer repair, kitchen plumbing jobs, bathroom plumbing jobs or any 24 hour plumbing need.

Help! My Water Bills are High

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009 by Ray Lee Master Plumbers

I've had high water bills for several months now. I have looked for water leaks and also investigated to see if I have wet spots on the ground outside the house to no avail. Do you have any ideas as I live on a fixed income?

Make sure you have checked all of your toilets for leaks by doing a simple and cheap test. Place a few drops of food coloring in the water in the tank. If the water in the bowl changes color without you flushing, then you know it's the flapper. If you replace the flapper and the water is still leaking, then check the stop to see if there are any cracks or grooves in it that prevent the seal from making a full contact.

If the toilets are not leaking, then you may have a broken or leaking water main underground. The only way to find this is to call a leak detection company, such as Roto-Rooter, that can use an acoustic leak detection device. Once the leak is located, the area is excavated the plumbing repair begins.

Search " Roto-Rooter Leak Detection Baltimore " on the Web (substitute Baltimore for your city). Roto-Rooter offers 24 hour plumbing so you can call us day or night.

Another Satisfied Customer

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009 by Ray Lee Master Plumbers

Thank you so much for following up with our last service call. The repair man was wonderful, prompt, professional and very friendly. We placed our service call on Sunday. At the time we did not know your company offered 24 hour plumbing services. The plumber was there to fix our bathroom faucet and had the problem resolved within 20 minutes.

This was the second time using your company and we were happy with both service experiences. Your rate is reasonable compared to other companies. With us having a home, you can be sure that we will use your company for all plumbing repairs. Truly appreciate the good service. Please keep up your good work.

Sincerely,

Ed & Kim P.
